This must be the place: odes to Japan to celebrate Ace Hotel Kyoto’s reservation launch
You can now book a room at Ace Hotel Kyoto.
Can you be in love with a place? Japan has been writ in our hearts since we started and we’re not the only ones. Kyoto has been a muse and lodestar to David Bowie, Charlotte Periand, The Talking Heads and poet Gary Snyder. It’s a place that exalts the simple pleasures and respect for traditions and each other. We’re situated just a stone’s throw from contemporary cultural treasures like the Nishiki Market, the Museum of Kyoto and Kyoto Art Center, and just steps away from Kamesuehiro, the iconic 200-year old confectionary.
Ace Hotel Kyoto makes its home in a part new build and part former home to a beloved telephone company. Masterfully dovetailed by the legendary architect Kengo Kuma, the building is a place in honest dialogue with the city’s past and future legends. We’re hanging the art, firing up coffee machines and rolling out the tatami mats. Ace Hotel Kyoto opens this April, but you can book a room now.
To celebrate our newest home and hotel, we’re throwing a host of events in cities the world over. They’re all part of our love letter to Japan, effusive and perpetually written.

Packing List: Madison Cunningham
Joan Didion authored many American classics — her shortest: a packing list published in 1979. The list, from her collection The White Album, was kept taped to the door of her Hollywood apartment closet for utilization at a moment’s notice. A tidy catalog of things that includes both stockings and bourbon, we often turn to Joan when staring down an empty suitcase. All this to say, we’re excited to introduce Packing List — a new Reader feature chronicling the tried-and-true travel companions of the wayfarers we know and love. Singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham kicks off the series as she tours in support of her fourth studio album, Ace (a coincidence, we swear).
