FORT MAKERS presents: GREEN HOUSE by SHINO TAKEDA

Fort Makers is pleased to present GREEN HOUSE, a solo exhibition featuring work by New York based ceramicist Shino Takeda. The pieces in this show were created during her residency at the hotel in July 2023.

For this inaugural Ace Artist in Residence exhibition, Fort Makers invited Takeda to focus her craft and knowledge of ceramics to create a range of new work including larger scale pieces that hold and sustain plant life. 

Influenced by her upbringing in Japan and her current home in New York City, Takedaʼs ceramics embody her sensory experience of sight, touch, taste, sound, and smell. Most of her works are hand-built using the coil method, and incorporate several different types of clay, making each piece one of a kind. Each sculpture is approached holistically so that the planters and their corresponding plants compliment and complete each other—one part finite, the other living, wild and ever-changing.  As nature continues to inspire humans to make art, we take pleasure in the thought that when art and nature are shown together as one, they communicate something more profound and transcendent.

Takeda worked with American Composer Nathan Larson on a soundscape designed for the installation.

Ace Artist in Residence is the embodiment of our deep conviction that artists deliver us a critical lens through which to understand the world and ourselves. Through the program, we turn our rooms into studio spaces and invite arts organizations to take residency at the hotel and present work in The Gallery. Read all about our past residencies here.

Ace Hotel Brooklyn’s partner, the multidisciplinary studio FORT MAKERS, connects creatives across disciplinary boundaries including contemporary art, furniture, stage and product design. In searching for a curated commonality across practices, FORT MAKERS creates space to discover the unexpected. 

Following Takeda’s residency, FORT MAKERS invited interdisciplinary artists Janie Korn, Margot Demarco, and Minjae Kim.
