Bubbles and Bivalves: An Evening of Oyster History and Tasting with Ben Harney
- 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm | Thursday November 18, 2021
- Demo Kitchen | Ace Hotel Brooklyn
- $40
Raise your glass and get ready to slurp and sip. On November 18, join MOFAD and Ace Hotel Brooklyn as we learn how to shuck oysters like a pro and prepare three different types of oysters (1 cooked and 2 raw) in a demo led by Ben “Moody” Harney, the founder of Mother Shuckers, a nomadic oyster cart based in Brooklyn that harkens back to the days when New York City was a bustling port town with oyster carts lining the streets.
Ben will discuss the fascinating African American history of oysters, including the legacy of Thomas Downing, a Black oysterman and an abolitionist who was known in the late 1800’s as the Oyster King of New York. Additionally, we’ll learn about different types of oysters, sourcing, oyster farming and reproduction process and the effects of current oyster culture on the food justice movement.
This is an in-person event. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.
You must show photo ID and proof of COVID vaccine to attend this event.
Doors open at 7pm. Program begins promptly at 7:30 pm. 21+.
Tickets include an oyster tasting and one complimentary glass of sparkling wine. Cash bar also available. We are unable to accommodate dietary restrictions at this time.
